Looking back at 2023
We are now looking back to see what we accomplished during this year. Swedish literature still travels wide and far, and despite the downward trends, it’s highly satisfying to see that there is still interest in reading books from all over the world, to meet and talk about books, exchange ideas and listen to other perspectives.
In total we supported 294 translations of books in all genres into 41 languages. Our special focus for 2023 was nonfiction and fiction and we were happy to be able to support the translation of 103 novels and 35 nonfiction titles into 33 different languages. We also had the pleasure of arranging two fellowships - one in Stockholm for 12 nonfiction publishers and one at the Gothenburg Book Fair for 12 fiction – and nonfiction publishers and 8 translators.
In the autumn, we released our catalogues New Voices in Swedish Fiction and Contemporary Swedish Nonfiction, which are still available in our Swedish Bookshelf at our website.
This year has been a great year for translator activities! We supported 121 applications from translators of Swedish literature, for research, travel, participation in seminars, sample translations, mentorships and lots of other things.
In addition to this, we also supported a number of workshops and seminars for translators in different countries. We also arranged digital translator salons, a translator conference and several meetings and workshops in different cities. In total, we estimate that more than 150 translators participated in different events during this year.
We hope to see you all next year and continue the conversation about literature. We wish you the best of times, happy holidays and a joyful new year!
