Swedish Literature Across the Continents

For the fourth distribution round of grants for international promotion of Swedish literature and drama in 2024, we approved 15 applications. In this allocation, we are happy to see applications from a wide range of countries outside Europe, enabling Swedish literature to reach both new and returning readers.

Some of the projects that we support:

The Literaturhaus Schleswig-Holstein in Germany is a non-profit institution that hosts various literature events with national and international authors. In the summer of 2025, Sweden will be in the spotlight as they organise the festival Literatursommer (Summer of Literature). They will invite four Swedish authors and arrange readings in collaboration with bookshops, museums and other cultural institutions.

LitFest Harare in Zimbabwe is granted for the invitation of the author Kristian Carlsson to participate in LitFest Harare 2024. The festival ran from November 27 to 30, and the author shared readings from his works and other works of Swedish literature, as well as hosted workshops with young writers to share knowledge and help them develop as writers.

The Tamer Institute for Community Education in Palestine has been granted support for literary events related to the translation of I mitt lilla hus by Anna Höglund. The institute will organise reading activities based on the book within their community library network and invite Höglund to discuss the story with librarians, focusing on how the book can be understood and received by Palestinian children.

The Swedish Embassy in Berlin is granted support for the focus on Swedish literature in a Nordic presentation at Leipzig Book Fair 27-30 March. The focus will be on newly published books and together with German publishers, the embassy will invite the authors Emma AdBåge, Ghayath Almadhoun, Jonas Jonasson, Frida Nilsson, Lina Wolff and Liv Strömquist, for author presentations.

URU Co., LTD in Thailand will arrange a book launch event, Pippi Longstocking: The World Beyond the Pages. They will arrange talking and storytime sessions with Pippi Longstocking inspired-games, role-plays and free play in Villa Villekulla. The event will open up for discussions on the cultural significance of Pippi Longstocking and her impact on society and children's literature.
