In this publication, we want to open a window on this very Swedish tradition, showcasing both new titles as well as older stories that still speak powerfully to young readers. These books deserve an international audience, and we hope they will find new readers far beyond Sweden’s borders.
We selected the titles with breadth in mind. You will find novels that engage seriously with children’s emotions and concerns - loneliness, fairness, courage - but never point moral lessons. You will find comedy and mischief as well as realistic stories that capture the nuances of everyday life. They are tales for children and adults alike to read with attention, tales that will linger long after the last page is turned.
The texts in this publication were written by author Mattias Käck, librarian Marcus Barbosa Ferreira, and literary scholar Peter Kostenniemi. We asked Swedish literary agencies to nominate books for selection based on criteria of literary excellence and international appeal. The final selection was made in cooperation with our external editor, Emma Lind. We hope this overview will inspire you, spark your curiosity, and give you a clear idea of the strengths and distinctive qualities of Swedish children’s fiction.
